Portfolio > Portraiture

From 2006-2009 I developed a series of portrait paintings. This most compelling and complex of challenges lead me to develop a more varied and well-evolved language of paint-marks, which later became integral to my working practice.

I discovered that it is the mark itself, perhaps above all things, that can be used to convey not only muscular structure and stance, but also deeper fundaments of character, mood, and environment. I consider the act of painting a process by which the marks themselves come together to create the form, gesture by gesture, until the subject itself appears and grows from the surface of the canvas.
